About Yu Suda and Ikigai Daily

Yu Suda writes about Japanese philosophy and intentional living from Tokyo. The work began as a quiet personal practice and grew into Ikigai Daily, a publication and small product line built around the question of what makes a life worth waking up for.

Most of the articles on this site draw on Japanese-language sources, primary texts read in the original where possible. The Western retellings of these traditions are often beautiful but partial. Ikigai, wabi-sabi, kaizen, kakeibo, Japanese minimalism: a fair amount of what circulates in English is downstream of one or two influential adaptations rather than the underlying tradition. Each piece on this site tries to bring readers back to what the tradition actually says, in language that respects both the source and the reader.

Editorial approach

The articles on Ikigai Daily are written to be useful first and decorative second. We avoid:

  • Vague spiritual claims unsupported by source material
  • Lists that pad word count without serving the reader
  • Promotional language pretending to be informational
  • Misattributed quotations or invented Japanese etymologies

We try for:

  • Specific names, dates, kanji, and original sources where they exist
  • Honest acknowledgment when a Western adaptation has reshaped a Japanese concept
  • Practical sections short enough to actually use
  • The tone of a friend who has read the source material and will tell you what it actually says

Independence and disclosure

Ikigai Daily is independent. There are no advertisements, no sponsored content, and no affiliations with any of the books, products, or methods discussed in the articles. The only product offered through this site is the Ikigai Life Design System, a Notion template sold through Gumroad. Articles that mention this product include a disclosure section before the product link.

Reader corrections are taken seriously. If you find a factual error, a misattribution, or a translation that you think misses the original, please write in. Substantive corrections lead to article revisions and are credited in a published changelog when relevant.

The five pillar guides

The current core of Ikigai Daily is a series of five long-form guides, each written in the same clear-eyed style and grounded in Japanese-language sources where available:

More guides will be added over time, including a forthcoming piece on shinrin-yoku, the Japanese practice of forest bathing.
